THE TRADITIONAL CIVIC ADDRESS

A CIVIC CEREMONY THAT RECREATES THE HISTORY OF MEXICO

The beginning of the independence movement began in the early hours of September 16th 1810, when the priest Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called the town of Dolores to rise against the Spanish Crown by summoning them all through the ringing of the church bells of his parrish and eloquently crying out loud the reasons to fight for independence. This event is known as “El Grito”.

To celebrate this historic event, a ceremony is held led by the President of Mexico, where the bells of the National Palace are rung, enacting Hidalgo’s call, at the same time that the Mexican flag is waved.

All over the globe, Mexican consulates and embassies will hold its own ceremony. It should be noted that they are the only officials of the Mexican federal government authorized to preside over this official civic ceremony.

Join Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed and the Consul General of Mexico in San Francisco, Remedios Gómez Arnau, for this historic and unique celebration!
